Drug Enforcement administration DEA is a department of the United States government responsible for preventing illicit drug trafficking in the United States. The department also handles various other instances related to drug trafficking, such as terrorism. For the purpose of tackling such complicated issues, the department hires individuals known as DEA agents. The United States government has taken the issue seriously in the past few years due to the increased trafficking of the drug from Mexico. The porous borders along with Mexico are being monitored. The 222 domestic offices in 23 divisions across the United States are evidence of how serious this issue is for the US government. The recruited DEA agents report to these offices about their operations.
The recruiting process for the job is quite challenging. A person willing to be recruited as a DEA agent must have a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and must be between the age of 21-36. Not just an educational degree, the recruit must have the sound physical condition too. A person possessing these qualities will then go through the selection process and, if selected, will join a training program being conducted in the DEA training academy in Virginia.
The job is based on the general pay scale of the United States government, and steady annual growth is expected during the job tenure. According to the bureau of labor statistics, the General pay for police and detectives recruits that includes DEA agents is $58,130. Apart from these monetary benefits, the DEA agents are given several other facilities, including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement plans.
