Most academies also include physical conditioning including obstacle courses and drills such as those used by military special units. Be sure to check with the training facility for more information on what uniforms are mandatory for each course, however these are the basics that most academies follow closely to. As mentioned prior, wearing name tags are highly recommended because they are used for accountability purposes when reporting injuries or completing paperwork after class, inspections, etc. Also consider wearing comfortable gym shoes and boxer shorts to sleep in, or sweats that can be worn during physical training.

Police academies frequently run obstacle courses as a part of police academy training because police officers need to be able to chase and catch suspects. Police recruits will need upper-body strength as well as good cardiovascular fitness, so police academies run obstacle courses that police recruits must complete before being allowed to leave police academy training. Police officers also need to have good balance, coordination, dexterity, and the ability to endure pain without complaining because police academy training includes taser training that police recruits must complete despite the electrical shocks running through their bodies. Police academy also includes learning how to use police batons and police nightsticks, so police recruits must practice using these weapons until they become proficient with them.

Police academies are highly competitive police academies expect police recruits to adhere to police department protocol, so police academy training includes teaching police recruits police procedures. Police academies require police recruits to be able to follow orders without question or hesitation. Police academies also require police recruits to learn police tactics for defusing violent confrontations without resorting to deadly force. Police departments want police recruits with the ability to defuse high-stress situations without taking a life if police academy training includes firearm use, police tactics. However, police academies must also teach police recruits how to take criminal suspects into custody without injuring anyone during police academy training that includes defensive tactics.

The First Phase of Police Academy Training

The first phase of training includes eight weeks of academics (aka studying) along with 21 days of physical conditioning. Officers must be fairly intelligent because the police academy curriculum emphasizes several different subjects simultaneously. Then there is four more weeks in the field learning what police officers do through classroom observation and hands-on training exercises. After that first phase is complete, there will be a written entry exam and a practical on what was learned.

You will also be required to attend an introduction briefing. Here they will go over some of the academy’s rules and regulations. They may also discuss issues such as safety in the police academy, first aid procedures, etc. This is generally a very easy period in which you are not expected to have any questions or concerns. Just sit back and enjoy your first lecture.

Phase Two of Police Academy Training

Phase two is made up of 15 weeks of intense field training with experienced officers. The first few months are spent in patrol cars riding along with an officer who will teach you the basics of being a police officer. Towards the end of phase two, cadets are usually paired up with their classmates and rotate through different assignments within the department. Once this rotation is complete, it’s back to patrol where you’ll ride for at least six months before getting your first solo assignment.

Police Academy Staff

Your first day at police academy begins immediately upon arrival on the premises—your first impression of life in law enforcement. Your first stop is likely one of many buildings located at the training facility, where you will be greeted by someone who introduces them self as your cadet advisor (CA for short). You might find out that there are several academies throughout the state and some officers go their entire career without meeting another officer from another academy. So it’s common for new recruits to feel like they have joined an exclusive club when they arrive at their local police academy.

CA’s are usually former or retired cops, who volunteer their time to help incoming cadets get through this significant transition in their lives. They are familiar with what you are going through and might even have gone through the same thing when they first entered police academy. Their primary job is to make sure you cross all required state lines when it comes to policies, procedures, protocols and training topics. They teach exams, help cadets study for them, keep track of who passes which state mandated test…all in all they try their best to make your first days at police academy as easy as possible.

Many new officers arrive on campus excited but unsure of what life will be like in police academy or out on the street. CA’s usually take advantage of this over-eagerness by putting these young recruits through some “torture.” One way is to introduce them to what’s called a “daily log.” It’s basically a form to fill out each day during cadet academy, that requires you to write down your first impressions of academy life. In other words, it gives the CA’s an opportunity to see what first-day concerns and worries are on the mind of new recruits.

Not surprisingly, this type of rigorous physical training is not for everyone. Those who feel that they would be unable to complete the requirements of the academy may want to do some research on the necessary physical requirements before they apply.
